A phase inversion benchmark for multiscale multiphase flows

نویسندگان

چکیده

A series of benchmarks based on the physical situation “phase inversion” between two immiscible liquids is presented. These aim at progressing towards direct numerical simulation two-phase flows. Several CFD codes developed in French laboratories and using either Volume-of-Fluid or Level-Set interface tracking methods are used to provide solutions benchmarks, convergence studies code comparisons. Two typical configurations retained, with integral scale Reynolds numbers 1.37104 4.33105, respectively. The physics problem probed through macroscopic quantities such as potential kinetic energies, enstrophy. In addition, scaling laws for temporal decay energy derived check relevance simulations. Finally droplet size distribution probed. Additional test problems also reported estimate influence viscous effects vicinity interface.

A Simple Theoretical Model for Prediction of Phase Inversion

Phase inversion in liquid-liquid dispersions corresponds to the transitional boundary between Oil-in-Aqueous dispersion and Aqueous-in-Oil dispersion. A theoretical model based on simple assumptions was proposed to predict phase inversion point, ambivalence region and the hysteresis effect of inversion. Experimental data from the literature were used to validate the model and results were c...

A preconditioned solver for sharp resolution of multiphase flows at all Mach numbers

A preconditioned five-equation two-phase model coupled with an interface sharpening technique is introduced for simulation of a wide range of multiphase flows with both high and low Mach regimes. Harten-Lax-van Leer-Contact (HLLC) Riemann solver is implemented for solving the discretized equations while tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) interface sharpening method is applied ...

A projection approach for multiphase flows

An Eulerian projection approach for incompressible variable-density two-phase flows is presented. The Navier-Stokes equations governing these flows are reformulated to take the form of the corresponding equations for the lighter phase with a constant density, which can be efficiently solved using standard numerical methods. The effect of the additional mass in the heavier phase is accounted for...

Modelling Compressible Multiphase Flows

We give in this paper a short review of some recent achievements within the framework of multiphase flow modeling. We focus first on a class of compressible two-phase flow models, detailing closure laws and their main properties. Next we briefly summarize some attempts to model two-phase flows in a porous region, and also a class of compressible three-phase flow models. Some of the main difficu...

Multiphase Cooling Flows

I discuss the multiphase nature of the intracluster medium whose neglect can lead to overestimates of the baryon fraction of clusters by up to a factor of two. The multiphase form of the cooling flow equations are derived and reduced to a simple form for a wide class of self-similar density distributions. It is shown that steady-state cooling flows are not consistent with all possible emissivit...
